Steve Kerr ATO Sets 2015 NBA Playoffs

A look at Steve Kerr’s After Time Out sets from the 2015 NBA Playoffs. His two favorite sets both involved Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, and both coming off of screens. The first is a nice double screen set for Steph Curry, where Steph fakes one way and then turns to sprint off of the double screen for a shot. The next is a post up set in order to trigger the “Split Cuts” the Warriors killed teams on this year.

Set of the Night: “Backscreen the Ballscreener”

One of my favorite actions that I first saw in the FIBA 2014 Wold Cup was from Lithuania. They had their big man set a HI Pick & Roll and then a guard followed behind and screened his man to prevent an easy recovery. The guard then popped up to the 3 point line and it was very difficult to guard. Since then, I have been looking for teams who have run this action or similar action to free up their big man on the roll. The Utah Jazz ran an awesome ATO set using this action and although Gordon Hayward missed an open 3 point shot it was just that-open. This action forces the defense to help in a way they may not be used to helping.

In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness.

Ohio State “Pindown Flare” Motion

Thad Matta has allowed Greg Paulus to take over the Offense for the 2014-15 Ohio State Buckeyes. He runs a really nice motion that flows well out of transition/secondary offense. Using Pindowns, Flare, Backscreen and Ballscreens this motion has a little bit of everything and can be difficult to guard. I beleive Greg Paulus adapted this from the Blazers:

After seeing Portland run this (and other teams, mainly Trail Blazers) I think they adapted it well to the already lethal Ohio State PNR Motion.

Oklahoma City Thunder “Backdoor SLOB”

Scott Brooks. When I say that name alot of fans/NBA followers usually associate him with not running any offense and being an overrated coach. Well, as of lately (especially after the trades) he has improved his half court offense and sets that he uses for the talent he has. Kevin Durant hasnt been healthy this season, but when he has Brooks has some new sets for one of the best players in the league. Here he runs a nice backdoor set for KD. Enjoy!

Pete Carril: 25 Little Things to Remember

25 Little Things to Remember
Pete Carril – Princeton University

  1. Every little thing counts. If it doesn’t, why do it?
  2. When closely guarded don’t go to the ball, go backdoor
  3. Whenever you cut, look for a return pass
  4. When you commit to a cut don’t stop
  5. Bad shooters are always open
  6. On offense, move the defense
  7. Pressure the ball so the offense is disrupted
  8. If the 5 man guards your 3 man look to throw crosscourt passes
  9. Watch the man in front of you. He shows you what to do.
  10. Keep you dribble. Dribble for something useful
  11. A pass is not a pass when it is made after you’ve tried to do anything else
  12. A good player knows what he is good at. He also knows what heis not good at and only does the former.
  13. You want t be god at those things that happen a lot
  14. When the legs go, the heart and the head follow quickly behind
  15. Defense involves three things: Courage, Energy, Intelligence
  16. If your teammate does not pass the ball to you when you’re open and he doesn’t say anything then he didn’t see you. If he says “I’m sorry”, he saw you but didn’t want to pass
  17. In trying to learn to do a specific thing, the specific thing is what you must practice.
  18. Whatever you are doing is the most important thing you are doing while you are doing it.
  19. Anyone can be average
  20. Being punctual is good in itself. However, what is more important is that your punctuality tells your teammates what you think of them.
  21.  Hardly any players play to lose. Only a few play to win.
  22. I like passers they can see everything
  23. The way you think affects what you see and do
  24. Rarely does a person who competes with his head as well as his body come out second. The ability to rebound is in inverse proportion to the distance your house is from the nearest railroad tracks.

Coach Holladay-Post Player Development

-FavoritecMove, then Secondary Move. (Always have a counter move)

-Jump Hook, Turn-Face Up Jump Shot

-Ball Fake ->Drop Step. Keep Shoulders Parallel to the basket

-Step Out Shots (Tyler Hansborough would make 200/day in an hour)

-Face Up, 1 Dribble->Attack the basket.

-Secondary Break Jumpers (Snap the wrist)

For drill purposes-Don’t throw the ball to hand-throw a direct bounce pass to the person belly button. Be sure to Seal w/ Elbows wide and butt low. (Make Post players work, shuffle to their spots).

Post Defense=If the offensive person is not a good scorer, no need to front the post. Raised Arms doesn’t equal foul.

Wall & Box out. On Wall-Lean back not over b/c the result will be a foul.

Hubert Davis–Perimeter Workout

Key: Create Separation

1.  Pin down – 6 shots

2.  Left hand layup

3.  Power Dribble Pull-Up Jumper

4.  Catch and Shoot (Find the sweet spot)

5.  Pump Fake-Jumper

6.  3 pointers

7.  1 dribble pull up away from stunting defender (Shoot the Gap)

Getting to the Corner

1.  Plant, Create Space, Power Dribble, Dunk/Layup

2.  Plant, Fade, Power Dribble, Floater (1 foot or 2 feet –disallows the charge)

3.  Plant, Fade, 1 dribble Pull Up Jumper

4.  Catch and Shoot

5.  3 Pointers

6.  Plant, Create Space, Power Dribble, Pump Fake, Jumper

*Extreme Push off with legs to create space

*Every Guard needs to have a floater as a part of his offensive game.

1 on 1 Moves:Always catch in Triple Threat and Rip Through Low and Strong

1.  Face Up, Rip Through, Lay Up (Left and Right Side)

2.  2 Dribble Pull-Up

3.  1 Dribble Pull-Up

4.  2 Dribble Pump Fake

5.  Step through off Pump Fake

6.  Step Back (Come into, Step Back)

7.  Cross-Over, Step Back Jumper

8.  Floaters(1 foot,2 feet – Better for avoiding the Charge)

Coach Robinson–Defense

Handling Screens–Bigs hedge, Guards fight over the top

-UNC wants their bigs to make guards change directions

-UNC likes to split up to teach defense in Group Work

Basic Shell concepts

1 pass away=Deny

2 pass away =Help Side

Everyone moves on “Flight of the ball” Retreat on the Direction of the Pass

Wants players to TALK (“Ball”,“Deny”,“Help”) Stay in Low Defensive Stance , don’t stand up

Roy Williams–“THE CAROLINA WAY”

Mostly talked about his secondary break and options they read off of that. Then took time for Q&A.

Understand how to coach your team– Calm & Teach or Wacko & Push

“Better you are, more you can push them”

“Less confidence in your team, more you need to be calm and coach” “Teach freshmen how to play when they’re freshmen”

“Do what is best for the program, not for just now, long term plans” “Weak leader is one who treats everyone the same”

Has 1 on 1 meeting to discuss individual game.

After 1st scrimmage talks about how if you want to play more then do this… To play less….do this….

On The Break-If you can get ahead/pitch ahead then do it. If not, guard needs to cross sides of the floor.

Screen in transition is Hard to Guard/In backcourt.

“Have to coach players individually more so than as a Whole Team”

Heat Defending Spurs STS With X-Action

The Spurs use Screen the Screener action in transition quite often, and it works really well. Here are some examples:

The way the Heat defended this action is by using the X-Out defensive tactic. Here is how they defended it in Game 1:

The Spurs start the action with Kawhi Leonard setting the inital screen on Duncan & Wade guarding the weak side Ginobili.

vlcsnap-2014-06-08-11h12m43s99

With the X-Action, Wade will switch off onto Leanord, and LeBron will swap onto Ginobili, I LOVE this defensive action.

This creates a false passing lane for a skip pass that LeBron can have a lane to run through for a steal.

h

The Spurs only ran this action twice, maybe because the Heat defended it so well.

Here Kawhi starts the STS with another screen on Duncan.

vlcsnap-2014-06-08-11h13m40s164

When the Heat X-Out again on this play, Wade is actually really late to recover on Kawhi leaving him open.

vlcsnap-2014-06-08-11h13m45s224

Although Kawhi doesn’t take advantage of this mistake and actually goes into the help and Wade strips him for a LeBron dunk.

Manu Ginobili Pick N’ Roll Attacking 2014 NBA Playoffs

Manu Ginobili is an elite playmaker and scorer out of the Pick and Roll/Ballscreen action. Here we break down how he reads the defense and scores or creates for his teammates.

Full Video:

Lets look at how he attacks the rim and gets the defender on their heels by the use of misdirection. Below is the video of Manu utilizing misdirection before he attacks the Ballscreen. My favorite ones are when Reggie Jackson (who I believe is a good on ball defender) is guarding Manu and he leans left and drives right for a layup with ease.

One of the moves Manu employs is called a “Load Step.” I recently learned about this move through a breakdown that John Leonzo (@John_Leonzo) created a video on his YouTube page. I recommend you check out his YouTube page he has great videos that have helped me as a coach!. Here is his video on the “Load Step.”

Here is Manu taking his Load Step to attack:

Image

One of the key messages of the next video is DON’T GO UNDER THE BALLSCREEN GUARDING MANU. He is so lethal at shooting when his defender goes under the ballscreen. Dallas tried to switch, but failed because of Manu’s attacking ability the big had to play too far off.

ImageImageImageImageImage

Manu’s passing ability and creation out of the Pick and Roll is probably made easier with all of the shooting surrounding him on the Spurs roster. My favorite passes from Manu are below:

Hope you guys enjoyed this breakdown of Manu and his Pick and Roll attacking. If you have any video requests please let me know @HalfCourtHoops!
